Subtracting one object from another to create a hole

Hi,
Probably a simple question for most experienced users!
Example, flat plate with a solid pipe running all the way through it.
I would like to subtract the pipe from the plate to leave the hole running through.

For me, not easy to work out a simple way to achieve, can anyone guide me through please, preferably with screen shots.
